Petersen Everywhere

01. Introduction

This was a collaborative project to design an app that enhances the Petersen museum experience for customers. The app extends the museum experience into Los Angeles, and shares the history and impact of automobiles in America’s life and culture.

02. Research

To understand the museum patrons’ needs, we conducted a field study at the Petersen museum. We observed user behaviors, conducted interviews, and documented the museum experience.

03. Findings

From the research, we discovered two main insights.

1) Users didn’t have enough time to explore all of the exhibitions.

2) The museum needed more ways to engage with the users.

Based on our observations we created 3 personas, with our main persona being the “car expert” Steven G. From the personas, we created a journey map.

04. Ideation

Based on our insights, we began to sketch out all of our ideas. We created concepts that helped solve pain points across Steven’s entire journey map, from the planning phase to his post-museum experience.

05. Petersen Everywhere Concept Direction

We tied our concepts back to our original research and insights to see which one was most appropriate and useful for our user persona.

We eventually chose to move forward with the “Petersen Everywhere” concept. This app connects users with auto-related tour experiences around Los Angeles. This feature would enhance our user’s museum experience by providing fun, unique and budget-friendly adventures outside of the physical museum. Even after a customer has finished visiting the museum, our app will allow them to continue to experience the spirit of the museum in their every day surroundings.

06. Low to High Fidelity Wireframes

Once we decided on a concept, we created low to high fidelity wireframes for various tasks in the app. We conducted user tests and discovered that the most important pain point was the confusing icon choices across the entire app. Users did not know what the icons represented, and therefore did not know how to complete their objectives.

After rounds of user testing and finalizing our wireframes, we created an information architecture map to organize all of our screens.

07. User Scenario

To provide better context for the Petersen Everywhere app, we created a final scenario for our main persona, Steven.
